Varanasi 1 – the holy city

at mid-december I was crossing the boarder between Nepal and India,

and next morning I arrived in Varanasi, the holy city of Hinduism.

For those who don’t know, the city is situated on the boarder of the Ganga river,

who take a bath in this sacred water get purified, spiritualy.

It is also a place were a fire started more than 3000 yeras ago is still kept alive and used for the burning of dead people, the custom for hindus. It is believed that if after your death you get cremated here on the side of the Ganga, you break up the cycle of reincarnation.

Here’s some drawings and pictures:

a drawing of the Burning Ghat, wich is the place where the bodies of the people that passed away are burnt, witnessed by the family, the cows, goats, dogs and people passing by:

Lumbini

Finally I decided to leave Nepal on the 8th of december,

I headed then to Lumbini close to the boarder with India.

This place is famous for being the birth place of Buddha.

I planed to stay there 1 or 2 days, but finally ended up staying a week.

I first met Nelly, a french girl that travel through Nepal doing many many projects, and she introduced me to Traditionnal buddhists painters, while they where painting the walls of a brand new temple in Lumbini.

she helped them painting inside the temple for a week. that was her last day when I met here, so naturally I stayed a few more days painting with them, helping with simple tasks.

spending my day painting and sharing some time with Mingmar the Master, Karma, Suman and the other painters.

that was a great time.

here are some pictures:

Karma, Mingmar and his portrait, me in action.. a detail of the wall painting and a few drawings.

Thanks to Mingmar and his great team!

Sur les chemins du Nepal

I got a beautifull motorcycle in Pokhara and decided to visit some other places…

so i left one morning, in the fog, heading to Bandipur.

I stopped to a little village called Galchina, I was attracted by this place since i ve seen a nice mosq in the entrance of the town.

So I stop my motorbike and quietly seat in front of a little tea shop and start drawing people..

After 2 minutes, i was totally surended by childrens, a hand with a milk tea appears between two kids, making a small opening in this circle of heads looking at me drawing.. thanks to the tea shop man for this delicious tea..

after a couple of drawings, sharing smiles and some good fun,

I took this picture, of the kids holding my sketchbook with their portraits on this page:

Then a few days later I visited Gorkha,

the place where the king of Nepal is originated, and from this kingdom he unified Nepal.

Leaving on the morning, I did this quick piece saying Namaste.

Just at the moment i was leaving, a horde of kids showed up…

saying Namaste!

Fly as high as a Baba!!

20th of October 2011,

I spent some time in Pokhara…

since it is a great place to paraglide, and because I met some paragliders,

I did a wall at ”Paraport”, wich is a bar next to a landing zone, where people end their flight, and have a drink..

Thanks to all the paragliders I met and the team that works at Paraport!

Here you can see a Local Saddhu and “Bidessi Baba djie” flying together in the sky of Sarangkot

(the “take off” place up to Pokhara)

you can also see in the background the Machapuchare, the sacred mountain that looks like a shark teeth…

A few people tried to climb there and all died… so now it’s closed and considered as the home of gods.

Meet “Bidessi Baba djie”

Here’s my first wall in Nepal.

I called this character “Baba from the West” and translated in Nepali and Hindu it means ”Bidessi Baba Djie”

This old hobo, with his hat, wandering around East Canada hoping freight train has evolved to a new character…

Here, he is respected as a Saduh, you know, those ascetic wandering monks with dreadlocks smoking shiloms and praying Shiva…

that fits pretty well the character..

Here he is, with his little daughter that says Namaste to everybody.

Baba from the west - pokhara

Merry Christmas!
